‘Wich Wednesday: Monte Cristo Recipe
If you like a combination of sweet and savory, few sandwiches walk the line better than a Monte Cristo. This evolution of the French Croque Monsieur is essentially a grilled cheese with meat and French Toast for buns.
This recipe is much more simple than it appears. If you can make French Toast, you can make a Monte Cristo.
Here are the directions:
- Whisk eggs and milk together to make the batter.
- In a skillet on medium heat, melt butter.
- Dip the outside of two pieces of bread in the batter.
- Place the bread into the hot butter, and layer on cheese, ham, and turkey. For best results, layer cheese – meat – cheese.
- Place the second slice of battered bread on top batter side up.
- Flip and cook until golden brown on both sides.
- Dust with powdered sugar and serve with fruit preserve for the sweet and savory combo. If that’s too sweet for you, consider subbing Dijon mustard.
